This theme chess set depicts the characters, particularly Richard. The set comes in two versions - this one is the hand decorated set, finished in Gold and Silver striking colouring.
The famous Couer de Lion Richard the Lionheart was known as such even before his accession because of his miltary reputation. At only 16 years of age, Richard had his own command, putting down rebellions in Poitou against his father, Henry II.
Richard was a central Christian commander during the Third Crusade, effectively leading the campaign after the departure of Philip Augustus and scoring considerable victories against his Muslim counterpart, Saladin.
